Ok Chris,
I know that you emailed me, or posted some attachments that showed the location of the Tsuka post mortises. For the life of me I cannot find them. Can you repost please?

Thanks

I have a set of good quality brad point bits on mail order, with which I will drill the cross-wise pin mortices before chiselling square. I have also ordered the timber that will be laminated to make the hip rafter.

Getting there.

Hmmm, not quite sure how I screwed up the orientation on those pictures.

Looks good - feel free to do the pin mortises as well. I'll get to work on the next mailing in the next couple of days.

Hi Derek,

Out of curiousity: is the timber pictured bog standard radiata (like from a big green shed)?
I noticed you said you were ordering some timber for the hip rafter, so I'm interested whether its the same or perhaps a better quality of timber there? (Or just a size that isn't as easily available).

Regards,
Iain

Hi Iain,
Sorry for the tardy answer. Yep, just plain old Crapiarta from a lumber yard (a Mitre 10 from memory). It's 50mm rough sawn 'Clear Pine' and I have laminated it and dimensioned it. The hip rafter will be the same stuff and probably laminated from pieces of the same initial dimensions. Unfortunately it's touch and go to get the required dimensions of 80mm by 140mm and two metres long without an undue number of laminations - 80mm means losing less than 20mm over two pieces that are only 'nominally' 50mm thick, and often less in reality. Any cupping or bowing over the 2m obviously hurts. It looks pretty rough in the pictures as it is directly off the jointer/thicknesser.

If you know a really good source of clear, straight grained softwoods, in really large dimensions, well dried, going cheap, somewhere in Australia then please share it!!

Regards

Derek
