Fellow woodworker John Aniano was kind enough to give me a split of Goumi, and so I've detailed the process of replacing my rosewood chisel handles with more appropriate goumi handles;

Re: Replacing the handles on Oire Nomi
As a minor note, the Japanese name is gumi, written as 'グミ'. I think the word 'goumi' comes from French from what I am able to gather - clearly a mistaken translation on their part.

I wonder if both pronounce it the same way, I say 'goo-me' to pronounce it in both instances, is this accurate?

I don't know about the French pronunciation -what does the addition of an 'o'before the 'u' change? - but the way you are saying it is correct.

O before U is the same sound as just a U so it seems they sound the same in both versions.

In other words, the 'o' is completely superfluous, which was my original point

Oh I agree, I just used that since we stumbled upon Yankee 'goumi' as a nod to the place of origin and its strange habit of adding the 'o'.

I was so inspired that I ordered a China Silverberry plant for my garden (I'm serious). Will be delivered in March 2017.

Awesome! Should be fairly easy to take care of I assume. I am going to prune one in November-ish to take some handle sized branches.

As for the pronunciation of goumi in French, I can ask some francophones and see what they say.
Re: Replacing the handles on Oire Nomi
I did a search and found "china silverberry" is possibly an invasive species. Wikipedia says "cherry cilverberry" (Elaeagnus multiflora) is gumi. Was China a typo Chris?Chris Hall wrote:I was so inspired that I ordered a China Silverberry plant for my garden (I'm serious). Will be delivered in March 2017.
