Hollow chisel mortiser

Fri Nov 07, 2014 2:13 am

Does anyone know if their might be a supplier of used portable hollow chisel mortisers? I would be looking to use it for timber framing and a typical section of wood it would have to clamp to would be an 8"x8". I used a Hitachi once upon a time but it was a tad too small to handle an 8" section. I find them to be slower than a chain mortiser,( i have two of these and sold a third ) but more accurate and they leave a very clean mortise unlike the chain variety. A lot of the cutting will be done in cedar so i think that the chisel type mortiser could handle that. Also wondering if bits can be obtained as well? Thanks, John.

I think you'll find used ones a bit scarce on the market John. Probably Ebay would be your best bet.

If you look at buying a new one, Makita makes a model, the 7305L, which can fit onto a 14.25" (363mm) timber. I could order one for you from Japan.

Thanks For that Chris i appreciate the help. By the time the dust settles, i think a new chain mortiser from Maffell costs around $5000 CDN or at least it used to when the dealership was in Canada, but it has since moved to the USA so i'm not sure what the price is. Any idea what the unit described might cost Chris?

I imagine you could have one to your front door for around US$2000~2100, and I imagine Canada Customs will take their piece on top of that. A lot of machine for less than half of a Mafell. I think it comes with a 30mm chisel, which, to be honest, it has to work hard to push. A better choice for all-around use is the 24mm chisel. If you were to order the machine, it would make sense to pick up a few chisels to go with it, and these could be stuffed into the same shipping box as the mortiser.

Again thanks for the info. The precision of this type of mortiser is nice for sure. Tough to give up the speed of the maffell but it also gets you into trouble occasionally. Didn't realize it would be this straight forward, nice. Will be considering the new unit further. Thanks Chris. By the way, do you think 120 or 240 volt?

I think you will agree that this machine is not available in Canada. What about theUS? Or are these units only available from Japan?

The machines only come 100v., which works fine on 110~115v.
