Hi Chris,
I noticed the makita boring machine you had in your most recent post on the carpentry way. http://www.thecarpentryway.blogspot.com ... ay-71.html
How do you like it? It appears specifically geared towards beam work. I'm not in the market just curious for those who may take on a timber frame or massive furniture project in the future.

Re: Makita boring machine
They call those 'kaku-nomi ban'- hollow chisel mortisers. That particular one has a wide clamping base and isn't made anymore, though Makita still makes a couple of other models. It's not quite so accurate as a stationary hollow chisel mortiser, however it is indispensable for certain tasks, like the door edge mortising shown in Gateway #71.
An earlier blog post shows a video of the machine in action.
