Craftsmanship in Wood

As I plan the new shop, this thread has come back to mind. A table saw with a "small" slider (vs a full panel saw) is a definite possibility, akin to the PK100 Marc mentioned. To date, I've always used an SCM or radial arm saw for initial rough crosscuts, prior to jointing and planing. Are there any disadvantages to using a sliding table saw in this role?

The sliding table saw, if it is decently made, is going to be the more precise tool for cross-cutting, however there is obviously an upper length limit, in most situations, for the stock you can safely cut on the table saw. Long pieces, say over 3m in length, are more suited to be cut in some sort of cross-cutting saw, either radial or SCMS. Of course, you would need to have such a saw set up with long support tables to both sides.

I'd stick with the chop saw for rough cutting.
