Hard to go wrong if it is made in Germany or Japan. The sting of the high price is only suffered once, unlike the sting of poor performance on a lesser machine which is felt for the lifetime of ownership. That said, we all have to cut out cloth according to our pocket. I've found it invariably better to wait and save a bit more money, and keep looking to see what comes up for sale. I surmise though that shopping in Australia is a bit like shopping in Canada - a relatively small population means the volume and selection of things for sale is going to be less than what one would find in Europe or even the US.
