Chest of drawers

Thu Jul 17, 2014 7:08 pm

Just completed this chest of drawers. The original, by Garret Hack, served as the inspiration. Done in butternut and some walnut trim it was a fun build learning some new techniques. They included

dovetailed web frames
solid case sides requiring web frames to expand with wood movement
Working with large planks over 18"
building the separate base with beading
Frame and panel back with relatively thin frames.

Butternut is a bit soft compared to walnut and cherry. However, it was very easy to work with hand tools, machining, and is light weight which is a plus.

Sal,
That is a beautiful piece. I love the proportions and the understated embellishments. The grain on the front drawers is interesting without excessively vying for attention.

The small dark draws seem a tiny bit out of place, but that could just be me

Well done.

Very well done Sal, do you have any more pics of the sides/back/drawers?

Thanks for the comments. Getting outside opinions are very helpful.

I am travelling for two weeks and can post some pics of the sides and back when I return home.

Thanks again

I like that very much. I think the graining is very nice. Where will it go and what will be around it?

Paul,

Thanks for the reply.

The chest was a replacement for a piece in our guest room. I will work on the other furniture surrounding it as time permits.

Not the best pictures; but a quick shot of the back, side, and drawers as requested.

Regards
Sal
