Hollow Wood

Tue Mar 31, 2015 12:41 pm

Hola....

this is the second hollow Wood surfboard that I made.....

its made of Kiri......as it is resistant to saltwater......

and glued with epoxy......

I am making a diagonal frame (inside).......

as an experiment to see if it can survive the expansión and contraction of the outer skins.....

the board is hollow.......

and has a screw that is left open to reléase the air pressure when its not in the wáter.....

so far.......it is watertight after one year of use.....

it is finished with 8 coats of tung oil......

I love this! This is certainly a project that will test joinery and fit as a surfboard is put through a lot of stress. How did you determine the internal structure and how is it held together? I really like the shape and look. How much does it weigh?

Hola...

the internal structure is inspired by the skeleton of a salmon......

curves under the outer skins ........add some strength......with less weight.....

trial and error.....

I had very good feedback of how it performs in the water.....

The rails and ribs are bent laminations........using bowyers techniques....

and joined togheter with mortise (rails) and tenon (ribs).....

it weights 4.0 kg

I live in Missouri so a surf board would not be practical, but it would be fun to build. Thanks for the pictures.
