One of the things that i should mention is that the plans by Van Arsdale have a bunch of issues built into them that have repercussions as far as the joinery configuration goes. He chooses, for example, to make the posts wider than they are thick, and this means that the stretcher passes through a shorter mortise than otherwise.
So, in dealing with the issue of connecting a stretcher to a post, I will disregard these restrictions and talk about making the connections through a post which is square, a more typical application. I'll talk about how making a post thinner affects the joints one might choose.
I'm thinking I can make a start on this tomorrow.
