Re: House Sign
Thanks for the kind words gents. Hopefully I'll finish fitting up the joints on the weekend and I'll snap some photos afterwards.

Re: House Sign
Nice work Derek! I'm amazed that you can walk away from nearly fitted joints, I find that incredibly hard to do but definitely for the best as your joints look spectacular.

Re: House Sign
Thank for your comments Brian.
I can certainly understand that sentiment, and it is tempting to press on, however from past experience, pressing on with fitting joints, in bad light, when I'm tired, leads to regrettable outcomes.

Re: House Sign
Didn't get the joinery finished this weekend but got about 95% of the way. Mainly just need to remove a bit more meat off the mitred portions so they can fully close up tight. Unfortunately one joint has come out slightly under square and will need a tiny adjustment - That will require tender ministrations to straighten without opening the joint too much.

Re: House Sign
Hello Folks,
Sorry I haven't been around much. I did finish this project some time ago and have had it adorning my house entrance since then. These next photos show how the corners faired - I find it hard to get that last 1/2 mm gap closed up on these compound joints: Clearly I went with a very simple edge treatment - I did want to get the job finished after all. Finally here it is near the house doorway. It only has one coat of oil here - it will get another coat and a good waxing: And one more with a little bit of context: Final thoughts - This iteration of the hopper was much better executed than the first and I have a useful item as a bonus. Getting super tight compound joinery is still a challenge but that also is improving with each attempt. Lastly I am very pleased with the aesthetics of the Hopper as a border for a sign and I could just as easily see it applied as a painting/artwork frame. I can see myself using this concept again - even with the undecorated edges I feel it gives a very stately appearance.
Anyhow - now that you all know where I live, I am expecting a few more drop in visits to share a quiet ale...
Warm regards
Derek

Re: House Sign
Looks very nice indeed Derek! I love how the simple appearance hides a fair degree of complexity in the layout and execution. Have you had anyone notice it, for what it really is, and comment upon it?

Re: House Sign
Chris,
Thanks as always for the kind words. Having finished it now, and being able to appreciate it as a House Sign, I feel a main reason for its effectiveness is that the appearance is simple - the structure doesn't compete with the 'message'. A few family and friends that knew I was making it, made nice comments when they saw it go up, none really interested in the execution. Many others have just walked past it without comment and I haven't had an opportunity to witness any reaction (to be fair it's been winter here and daylight hours short, so many arrivals have been in poor light), only one friend (who happens to be an engineer) looked at it closely, bent down and looked at the corners a little perplexed. He made a comment along the lines of 'why have you placed these pegs on the outside' and I then explained that they weren't decorative.
Overall though, I'm very happy and glad to have accumulated the skill sets to incorporate some compound joinery into my habitat.

I've heard that one before myself. He made a comment along the lines of 'why have you placed these pegs on the outside' and I then explained that they weren't decorative.
