You may need to tell google translate to change to english but I thought this was an interesting study of various joints.

Pretty cool little chair if a little lacking in aesthetic appeal.

Re: Chair built from joint study
Chris,
thanks for that. I hope you realize it's not actually meant to be a chair. They call it a tsugu-zō (継ぐ蔵), a 'storehouse of joints'. They're a fairly typical sort of project at technical schools. Sometimes they make little 'buildings' for the same purpose - cram as much different joinery into the model as possible for the purpose of study:
I thought of doing something similar at one point, but decided that individual joinery models would be better perhaps.

Re: Chair built from joint study
Thanks Chris,
I assumed it had it's purpose outside of a functional chair. The chair is a cool exercise but I very much like functional projects. There is a psychological aspect to a functional project that makes it more palatable to invest in good wood, new tools, etc. (not to say that joint studies don't have their place, as demonstrated by you and those on this board)
Has there been a decision on the next project? Or will that be decided after these joint studies have been completed?

Re: Chair built from joint study
Well then, let me throw some out there:
coffee table
matching bedside tables
or the big one:
A dresser with drawers like you describe here:
http://thecarpentryway.blogspot.com/sea ... %20methods
I'm still working on starting the toolbox, sawhorses and hopper so hopefully others will chime in and share what they'd like to do since they've actually completed the first projects. Just some needed pieces of furniture around our house, ha ha.

Re: Chair built from joint study
Hello all, first post here.
The chair reminds me of Rietveld's Steltman chair in a couple of ways - the overall shape, and the way it forces me to consider its joinery!
Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of the man's work as an artist. Just not sure I want to sit in much of his furniture.
Back on topic, I find it interesting the Japanese term is "Storehouse of Joints" considering it kind of looks like a storehouse.
Perhaps the chair is the "Seat of Knowledge".
