Timber Framing Texts (in Engligh)

Mon May 08, 2017 10:31 am

Anybody care to share their favorite English language books on timber framing? I think I'm looking for intermediate to advanced level stuff- there's plenty of books aimed at beginners, I own Chris' TAJCD series, and I'm wondering if there's material in between. I'm hoping to get a better feel for general approaches to framing, sizing timbers, truss design, strategies for raising, etc.

Here are some titles I'm considering from the TF Guild online store:

A Timber Framer's Workshop, by Steve Chappell
Advanced Timber Framing, by Steve Chappell
Master's Guide to Timber Framing, by James Mitchell
Timber Frame Joinery & Design vols. 1&2, by TFG
Timber Framing Fundamentals, by TFG, Ken Rower editor

If anyone's read these and could comment on how you like them, or could recommend others, I'd appreciate it!

Thanks,
Matt

Mind you, I'm not a timber framer. That said I like to have a basic understanding of the field.

I like 'Measure and Construction of the Japanese House'.

I also like Len Brackett's book called building the Japanese house today, though it is not very technical it does have some practical commentary such as the things that they've had to do in order to have their houses pass American code, how to utilize stud walls in between timbers without creating an air leak...stuff like that. I've been finding it to be an interesting book.
