Mirror frame and medicine cabinet

Sat Aug 17, 2019 9:19 pm

For a pair of bathroom renovations. I live in Pacific Northwest of the USA. Our house was built by the previous owner in 1983 and has lots of oak and vaulted ceilings and funny angles. Lately I've been making Greene and Greene inspired furniture. For the bathroom I wanted something I think of as Pacific Rim craftsman: Asian influenced and Craftsman influenced. Here's what I came up with. The mirror frames and medicine cabinet are cherry with mitered mortise and tenon frames and ebony pegs. I did the joinery first, then shaped the relief on a router table to leave the raised edges. I like the remaining shadow lines. Tung oil finish (The oak cabinets were already there and were untouched).

I see the andon sill joint has found an application- looks good!

Must be very satisfying to remodel one's house - something I dream about but haven't made any headway on so far

Yes, exactly, thanks Chris, the andon sill was the inspiration. I love the look of the angles of that joint. I simplified the construction a bit since it was just a mirror frame and the forces aren't so great, but it is mortise and tenoned. The execution could have been a bit better and sanding in the corners was a bear but sometimes you just have to say it is good enough and move on. Wife loves it so we are both happy.
